RED TARN WITH CRINKLE CRAGS AND BOWFELL BEYOND

RED TARN WITH CRINKLE CRAGS AND BOWFELL BEYOND It’s called ‘Red Tarn’ because it once was, due to the extensive mining of the heamatite, high grade iron ore, found here beneath the ground. That was in the 1600’s and the ironworks in Little Langdale at that time were amongst the most important in Europe ‘second only to Danzig’. See my “A Year In The Life In The Langdale Valleys” and for walks “Walk The Langdales” Walk 16 ‘Crinkle Crags From The Three Shires Stone’ .
