A wonderful high fell outing climbing to Lakeland’s most iconic mountain – Great Gable. The route ascends via Sourmilk Gill and Gillercombe to top Green Gable before crossing Windy Gap to Great Gable. Descent is made down the south east shoulder to Styhead to continue by Styhead Tarn before descending to Stockley Bridge and following the track back to Seathwaite.

Description

A wonderful high fell outing climbing to Lakeland’s most iconic mountain – Great Gable. The route ascends via Sourmilk Gill and Gillercombe to top Green Gable before crossing Windy Gap to Great Gable. Descent is made down the south east shoulder to Styhead to continue by Styhead Tarn before descending to Stockley Bridge and following the track back to Seathwaite.

CLASSIFICATION: High fell walk (alt 899m)
LENGTH: 8km
TIME: 4.5 hours
DIFFICULTY: Very difficult, a mountain route with 870m of ascent. Generally the going is rough and stony though there are no technical difficulties
START & FINISH: The head of the Seathwaite valley, by the side of the road beneath the farm – don’t block any field entrances or the road (237 123)
