Starting from Surprise View it makes an anticlockwise round first following the Watendlath Road to Ashness Bridge before dropping to Barrow Bay. A walk along Derwentwater’s shoreline then leads to Kettlewell Car Park and Lodore Woods before ascent, beside Lodore Falls on neglected and tree bestrewn pathways, climbs back to the heights.

LENGTH: 5.5 km.
TIME: 3.5 hours.
DIFFICULTY: Mildly difficult, short road sections and a short strenuous ascent by Lodore Falls (160m).
START & FINISH: Surprise View Car Park in Ashness Wood (268 190).
MAPS: OS L89 or OL4.
HOSTELRIES: Mary Mount Hotel enroute. High Lodore Farm (Shepherd’s Café) and Caffle House Tearoom in Watendlath are nearby.
